By Rick Rodriguez, Former Mayor of Downey
As a proud former mayor of Downey, I’ve always believed that public safety is not just a priority for a few – it’s the responsibility of all of us. Our families, our businesses, and our neighborhoods thrive when we feel safe. That’s why I’m endorsing Measure D, a critical step in ensuring the safety of Downey’s future.
We all know that the world is changing, and unfortunately, it has never been more difficult to hire police officers. Departments across the country are facing recruitment challenges, and Downey is no exception. This shortage puts pressure on our existing officers and limits our ability to respond swiftly and effectively to the needs of our residents. Measure D is an essential investment that will allow our city to hire more police officers, ensuring that our police force can continue to provide the top-tier service we’ve come to rely on.
But Measure D is more than just a plan to hire more officers—it’s a responsible and practical investment in our city’s future. The cost is relatively minimal: a quarter-cent increase to our local sales tax. For most of us, that’s a small price to pay for safer streets and quicker response times in emergencies. And because this is a local measure, it ensures that Downey keeps our tax dollars under local control. We won’t be sending our hard-earned money to Sacramento or Washington, D.C. Instead, those funds will stay right here in Downey, directly benefiting our community.
Another important reason I support Measure D is the strong leadership behind it. I’m glad to see that our current Downey City Council is unanimous in its support of this measure. They understand, as I do, that this is an investment in our city’s safety and future well-being. When local leadership stands united behind a cause, it tells me that this is the right choice for our community.
Public safety is a team effort, and it requires proper resources. By voting “Yes” on Measure D, we’re not just supporting our police and fire departments – we’re supporting a safer community for all of us. This measure will provide the funding necessary to keep our streets safe and give our officers and firefighters the tools they need to do their jobs effectively.
I know that the safety of our families and businesses is your top priority, as it is mine. Let’s make sure that we are giving our city the resources it needs to protect us. Together, we can build a stronger, safer Downey for generations to come.
Please vote “Yes” on Measure D. Our future depends on it.
